Krista S. Artís is a New York based Stylist who pays homage to the origins of her fashion career through a pictorial collection shot and styled by herself entitled, “Soul of a Man.” The collection features her father and brothers in Southampton County, Virginia; home of Nat Turner’s slave rebellion in 1831. What started as a photo essay capturing the “day in the life” of her father for his birthday, evolved into a collection highlighting faith, family and fun. Artis’ work juxtaposes the harsh realities of society with hope and raw moments of beauty in daily life. She draws on the legacies of portraiture, documentary photography and the family album.
